Made-to-Order Specialty Design: Dune Cup & Mug
Whenever I think of Dune, my first thought goes to watching the SyFy channel Dune miniseries with my dad when I was maybe nine years old. I may not have fully grasped the plot, but the world of Dune stuck with me, and without my realizing it, it became a quietly influential part of my sci-fi and fantasy-loving self.
As I developed the designs, I sought to create vessels that looked as though it would fit in the world of Dune, as though you might walk into a sietch and see a group of Fremen sipping precious water from them.
(Revisiting Dune as an adult gave me a new perspective on the story. While both the original book and new movie sometimes struggle to navigate white savior and orientalist tropes, I was excited to see this complex, almost sixty-year-old story given a compelling new life. If you'd like to learn more about the complex history of Dune, I invite you to listen to this episode of NPR's history podcast "Throughline".)
— Holds about 12 fl. oz.
— Food, dishwasher, and microwave safe.
— Because each mug is handmade and unique, there will be minor differences in size, shape, and glaze finish from the photo shown.

If this is your first time hearing about my Made-to-Order option, think of it as a structured commission, or a pre-order. You pick what you want, and I make it.
It’s a way for you to get the piece you want without having to wait for me to make it in a regular update. However, the designs/shapes/colors you can choose from are those I have made in the past, so this isn’t a way to order a completely new and unique piece.
I don’t have photos of every design and color variation, but you can browse a number of examples in my online gallery, or check out my Instagram.
And of course, if you have any questions, feel free to send me an email or message me on my social media accounts (@lindseymdillon).
A quick review of the Made-to-Order system…
1. You choose the design, shape, and color you want from a set of options. (For example, you could choose the Coffee Stat design, in the stein shape, with the green glaze.)
2. I work on your mug, completing it in the order it was placed. There may be several orders ahead of yours, or you might be first in line.
3. I ship your finished mug to you in 2-4 months from the date of your order.
Important Note:
I will do my utmost to keep to the 2-4 month timeline. Knowing that, there is always an element of chance in ceramics. Whether it's a power outage that stops the kiln running, an unexpected crack or break in the mug, or my getting sick, there is always a chance that something could delay the delivery of your mug.
If something does happen, I will communicate the situation immediately and do what I can to get your mug to you as soon as possible.
Once your mug is completed, I will pack it with care and send it your way!
If you have any questions about the Made-to-Order system, feel free to shoot me a message on Instagram (@lindseymdillon), or through my website (www.lindseymdillon.com).

Every mug I make starts out as a lump of clay on the pottery wheel.
Each one is made one-at-a-time, by hand, by me, in my studio in Sacramento, CA.
(No shadowy assistants mass-producing these in the background — just me, my pottery wheel, my kiln, and a lot of podcasts.)
